Fire Flocks arrives at Montnegre-Corredor with the support of CaixaBank

Fire Flocks project was recognized with one of the prizes of CaixaBank’s 2023 environmental call, used by the entity to supports projects that improve the natural heritage.

The funding received has made a successful implementation of the project at Montnegre-Corredor natural park and in this way contributed to reducing the risk of forest fires, promote biodiversity and promote the sale of products from local livestock farmers.

Specifically, 10 shepards from the natural park and linked to the owners’ association of Montnegre have joined Fire Flocks. Thanks to their herds, forest fuel has been reduced in more than 500 hectares, thus preventing the risk of wildfires in this protected space.

The value of livestock products has also been reinforced, labeling them with the Fire Flocks mark, and informative cards have been designed to distribute them in different local shops and thus announce the project’s tasks and encourage consumption of proximity.

Awareness for the prevention of wildfires

The prize also allowed to organize two sessions, one about forestry voluntary service and the other about wildfires awareness in a local school.

The students of the Quintanes agricultural and forestry school have volunteered to support livestock farms in the area, carrying out clearing and clearing work to facilitate grazing on land linked to the project.

While at the municipal school of Vallgorguina, within the Montnegre Corredor natural park, primary school students have attended a MeFiTu workshop given by members of the Pau Costa Foundation’s education department.

The workshop let the students raise awareness about wildfires and learn about the importance of landscape management to prevent wildfires. In addition, the children also had the opportunity to visit the Can Plana Farm, a local livestock farm where the students became aware of the value of extensive livestock farming and local consumption.

Finally, it should be noted that the collaboration of local livestock farmers and the participation of the local population together with the support of CaixaBank has been essential to implement Fire Flocks at the Montnegre-Corredor area.
