Through the Pau Costa Foundation, we contribute to RUMIAR, a project coordinated by Tarragona Provincial Council, and BOSCAT, Concactiva, Forest Science and Technology Center of Catalonia (CTFC) and Pau Costa Foundation (FPC) as project partners.
RUMIAR aims to generate a more resilient landscape to prevent the risk of wildfires in Prades Mountain range through the implementation of agro-silvo-pastoral mosaic. And, to promote the local economy using forest resources.
Specifically, the project will implement mosaics as firebreaks in 11 strategic wildfire prevention areas distributed across 8 municipalities (Mont-ral, Montblanc, Vilaplana, Cornudella del Montsant, Alcover, Capafonts, Alforja, and la Riba) in Prades massif, a protected area of the Natura 2000 Network and the only one in Tarragona’s mountains with active shepherds.
The project will also promote silvopasture and forestry activities to maintain this structure and the products derived from these activities.
We will use the expertise to enhance local livestock sector conditions and promote local products.
“Prades Mountains are one of the few places where there are still active shepherds. We must take advantage of this opportunity to work with them to manage the territory and prevent the risk of wildfires. But at the same time, we need to ensure that shepherds and the stock sector can have facilities to get ahead,” says Guillem Canaleta, project technician.
RUMIAR will allow us to generate a positive change in the socioeconomic development of the Prades Mountains by improving local livestock and forestry sector conditions and opportunities.
“We will work together with authorities, owners and the livestock sector to promote understanding and to establish work dynamics that can be sustained over time,” says Guillem Canaleta.
